covid-19 vaccine

COVID-19 has shocked the world and caused a lot of heartaches. With the start of 2021, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. With vaccinations rolling out in Massachusetts, there is hope life will return back to normal soon. If you are one of the lucky people receiving the vaccine, you may be wondering what to expect! Well, lucky for you the CDC released an article explaining what you should expect before, during, and after your vaccine. So, let's break it down!

Before Your Vaccine

Before you actually receive the vaccine, you need to make sure you are actually eligible to get it! Different states have different rules when it comes to getting vaccinated, so be sure to check to see if you qualify. Next, you need to make an appointment to get the vaccine. This can be done online, but again it depends on what state you are located in, so make sure you do your research before signing up!

In addition to research on your state, you should also be researching the different types of vaccines. Each vaccine is different and you may respond to them differently, so know what vaccine you want and why. To learn more about the types of COVID-19 vaccines available and how they work, check out the CDC's article on it here.

During Your Vaccine

The first thing you should do is make sure you arrive on time and arrived fully prepared. While you are in line for the vaccine and/or receiving the vaccine make sure you are staying 6-feet away from others. When you are receiving your vaccine, both you and the healthcare worker giving you the vaccine should be wearing masks at all times. Make sure your mask is covering both your mouth and nose in order for it to be effective. You should also confirm with your healthcare worker that the vaccine you are receiving is the one you signed up for.

You should receive a vaccination card that explains what COVID-19 vaccine you received when you received it, and where you received it. Make sure you keep this paper as you may need it in the future. You should also receive a paper that explains more about the COVID-19 vaccine you received and it should contain facts that help explain both the benefits and the risks associated with getting the vaccination.

After Your Vaccine

Most of the COVID-19 vaccines require two shots in order for the vaccine to be effective. You must get the second shot, even if you had side effects from the first one unless told otherwise by a doctor. There is a waiting period between the first and second shots, which allows time for you to heal from any side effects and let the first shot take effect. After your second shot, you may experience side effects again, but it is normal. If you fall seriously ill or have abnormal side effects, reach out to your healthcare provider. It is also important to note that it takes time for your body to build up protection after your vaccinations. It may take a few weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective after your second shot.

You must also take into account that just because you have been vaccinated, does not mean you are immune to COVID-19. You should still continue to wear your mask over your mouth and nose and maintain social distancing when possible.
