The quick answer: not always.
Every year, MassHealth reviews each member to confirm they still qualify. Some members are renewed automatically, when MassHealth can confirm their information through its own records. Others receive a renewal notice and a renewal form. Seniors and people receiving long-term care services renew using a separate renewal application for seniors, which can be downloaded from Mass.gov or submitted online. See Renew your MassHealth coverage.
If you receive a renewal notice, do not treat it as a formality. The renewal can ask for the same kind of proof as the original application, including bank statements and records of any changes in income or assets. If you do not respond by the due date on the notice, benefits can be reduced or ended.
The stakes are highest for someone in a nursing home. If coverage ends, the family is back to paying the facility’s full private rate while the problem is sorted out.
If you are worried that hiring a lawyer for a renewal will be expensive, keep in mind it will not be nearly as expensive as losing coverage and paying privately for nursing home care.
