client hugs

A client hugged me and told me that she loved me today.

That's really the kind of thing that reminds me about why I do what I do for a living. She came to us in obvious distress; her husband needed to go to a nursing home and was currently in the hospital. The hospital was looking to discharge him as soon as possible because there was nothing more they could do for him there. He needed to go to long-term care, and the hospital wanted him gone. He was in late-stage dementia at this point in the hospital and was just trying to be rid of him.

His wife came to us completely distraught about what to do and uncertain about what her options were for his long-term care. She was hearing different messages from the hospital, and the potential nursing home, about whether or not he would qualify for MassHealth Long-Term Care Benefits. These facilities are NOT experts at MassHealth applications, despite the fact that they may have a staff member “certified” to help you file the application. She was stressed, overwhelmed, and in a total state of panic.

Before I even had my first meeting with her, I was able to tell her that she came to the right place. I told her that “we got this” for her and that we specialize in this work. I told her that she can unload the burden of applying for long-term care to us and she could focus completely on taking care of her husband. She was stressed out to the point of tears and was being worn very thin with taking care of him and trying to figure out his long-term care plan. When I told her that we would be able to take the burden of the long-term care application away from her, she was visibly uplifted. I could actually see the weight coming off of her shoulders. I was thrilled to be able to do that for her and it reminded me of why I do what I do. That was last week.

This morning she came by to drop off some documentation and all she wanted to do was give me a hug. And when she hugged me she told me that she loved me. To think that someone that I just met could say that, and believe me she was sincere about it, reminded me about how much good we can do for our clients and for the world.
