Everyone's worst fear with nursing homes is neglecting or even abusing their loved ones who are living in one of these facilities.
This fear became a reality in five Massachusetts nursing homes located in the Bay State area.
Nursing homes in Agawam, Fall River, Kingston, and New Bedford have all reached settlements with Attorney General Maura Healey’s office.
Settlements of more than $250,000 will be returned to the state to resolve allegations of patient neglect, insufficient staff training, and inadequate care for nursing home patients, involving preventable harm and in some cases, death. These settlements also require important training and requirements to ensure patients are safe and are receiving proper response to medical emergencies from now on. More than half of the settlement will be going to the Massachusetts Departments of Public Health Long Term Care Facility Quality Improvement Fund.
The AG's Medicaid Fraud Division have reached a settlement with the following nursing home: Brandon Woods, New Bedford
Unfortunately, there were several cases of deaths in these facilities. In this specific case, there will be $52,000 paid to resolve allegations from 2018 in Brandon Woods, New Bedford, where facility staff did not properly treat a resident at high risk for pressure wounds for over five weeks. The patient was taken to the hospital, where she later died due to rapid health declines. AG Healey states that they are acting against these facilities to ensure that nursing home residents are receiving the best possible care, and to provide safety and training protocols to prevent any further harm such as this.
